Dust

Appears in 9 processs and 17 steps. Everything below is linked: open a process to see it in context.

Atmospheric dust deposition and loess as soil parent material

6 steps

Pedogenic carbonate accumulation and calcrete formation

3 steps

Wind erosion: saltation, dust emission and deposition

2 steps

Eroded dust is enriched in organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus relative to the source soil, so fields lose fertility faster than they lose mass
Dust travels far: the Sahara supplies about 28 Tg of dust a year to the Amazon basin, bringing about 22,000 t of phosphorus

Soil inorganic carbon: pedogenic carbonate formation and dissolution

1 step

Calcium arrives from silicate weathering, dust, irrigation water or dissolving old carbonate

Chronosequence: limiting nutrient and nutrient source shift as soil ages

1 step

Atmospheric dust becomes the main source of rock-derived nutrients
