Top processes

Enhanced rock weathering on cropland

3 steps

Carbon priming, microbial efficiency and soil carbon sequestration

1 step

Plant inputs, residue return and cover crops raise carbon input

Soil disturbance (fire, tillage, drought) and recovery

1 step

Tillage inverts soil and breaks aggregates

Earthworm drilosphere: gut passage, casts, middens and greenhouse gas effects

1 step

Tillage and some agrochemicals reduce earthworm abundance and species richness, especially anecic species

Soil compaction: stress, density, root limitation and recovery

1 step

Controlled traffic farming confines wheels to permanent lanes covering roughly 15-20% of the field instead of most of it

Erosion versus soil production balance

1 step

Tillage and bare ground raise runoff and erosion

Show 2 more processes

Biotic enhancement and climate control of weathering

1 step

Enhanced rock weathering on cropland

Soil production versus erosion (soil thickness balance)

1 step

Erosion strips surface soil (tillage erodes 10 to 100 times faster than soil forms)
