Mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) formation

1 step

Desorption or microbial mining returns some carbon to solution

Soil sulfur cycling

1 step

Arylsulfatase hydrolyses ester sulfates when sulfate is scarce

Carbon priming, microbial efficiency and soil carbon sequestration

1 step

Fresh labile carbon enters from root exudates, litter leachate or residues

Soil-plant-water coupling and drought response

1 step

Roots exude mucilage that holds water and eases uptake from dry soil

Phosphate sorption on Fe and Al oxides and phosphorus availability

1 step

Roots exude citrate, oxalate and acid phosphatase and form cluster roots, mobilising sorbed and organic phosphate

Aerenchyma, radial oxygen loss and the oxidised rhizosphere of wetland plants

1 step

Radial oxygen loss leaks Oxygen into the soil, forming an oxidised zone a millimetre or so thick around roots

Micronutrient availability: pH, redox and plant mobilisation of Fe and Zn

1 step

Dicots acidify the rhizosphere, reduce Fe3+ and take up Fe2+, while grasses release phytosiderophores that chelate Fe3+
