Preferential flow and macropore bypass

4 steps

Start: Preferential flow and macropore bypass
End: Preferential flow and macropore bypass
Cracks, worm burrows and root channels form a continuous macropore network

Soil compaction and loss of macroporosity

3 steps

Start: Soil compaction and loss of macroporosity
End: Soil compaction and loss of macroporosity
Macropores collapse first: air-filled porosity falls and bulk density rises toward root-limiting values of roughly 1.4 to 1.8 g per cm3 depending on texture

Water infiltration, retention and movement

Soil compaction: stress, density, root limitation and recovery

2 steps

Aggregate formation and pore structure

Soil compaction and loss of macroporosity

Matric potential and the soil water retention curve

1 step

Above field capacity macropores drain within one to three days and then internal drainage nearly stops
